light copyedit
Often confused with proofreading, a light copyedit focuses on spelling, grammar, usage, and punctuation. Abbreviations, variant spellings, and numeral use are checked for consistency. A light copyedit also makes sure figures and tables are in numerical order and correctly referenced in the text. Unclear or inconsistent text may be queried but will not be changed.
medium copyedit
In addition to covering all the tasks of a light copyedit, in a medium copyedit the content will be checked for clarity and logical construction. Inconsistent or unclear text will be revised if possible. Faulty organization or gaps in logic will be queried.
heavy copyedit
The heavy copyedit combines copyediting with some substantive editing. In addition to all the aspects of a medium copyedit, a heavy copyedit is concerned with the flow of language at both the sentence and paragraph level. This service includes revision of sentences that are convoluted or wordy. Sentences may be moved to create a more logical structure in the document.
